When the ancient<br \/>\ncity flooded, the only surviving artifacts<br \/>\nwere the heads of children depicted<br \/>\nin onyx that sat in the upper regions<br \/>\nof a temple said to have been built<br \/>\nto protect mankind from what could only be<br \/>\napproximated: storms, thefts, the tautology<br \/>\nof paradox. The children were smiling, chiseled<br \/>\nround as the space a star could leave behind<br \/>\nif plucked from dazzle. Give a man a god<br \/>\nand watch him usher himself into dawn<br \/>\nwith night clinging to his soles, dark wings<br \/>\ncarving a hard pattern into the sky,<br \/>\ndark wings pounding the air into storms.<br \/>\nHe wants to get away. He wants to take back<br \/>\nhimself from the world he thinks does not<br \/>\ndeserve him. He has made from antlers<br \/>\na fetish to adorn his neck. It chases nothing<br \/>\nback into the foreseen fearful world. It cannot<br \/>\nchase itself, wicked little dog always finding<br \/>\nits tail and making from its hunt an ouroboros.<br \/>\nWhat kind of hunger is this, talismanic, unkind<br \/>\nfutility called faith? What gods give<br \/>\nto themselves: humans to gift to them<br \/>\na shape, a mystery to govern. Each prayer<br \/>\ngoes up and completes the mask.<br \/>\nIt is kindergarten and the children approach<br \/>\ntheir thinking with glue and glitter, cardboard<br \/>\nshaped from youthful pathos into fearsome<br \/>\nforms. What could they hope for?<br \/>\nWhat does the tiger mask mean to them, red paint<br \/>\non its mouth for the blood sacrifice? In the temple<br \/>\nthe mother of these child deities is said to be<br \/>\na god of hope who uses her offspring\u2019s rain<br \/>\nto fill her vases and pour water gently<br \/>\nonto her own believers. The children rain down wrath<br \/>\nfrom their black heads: spit of curses, tears to menace.<br \/>\nWhen asked why men depicted an angry god<br \/>\nas a collection of bodiless children, a scholar<br \/>\nresponded, \u201cEternity has a face,<br \/>\nyoung and bitter.\u201d When asked why onyx,<br \/>\nshe said \u201cso that mankind could not see<br \/>\nwhen war arrived, when blood dropped like feet<br \/>\nto the earth, when houses burned<br \/>\nas though by lightning when was no lightning.\u201d<br \/>\nThe heart is an instrument of fear, its rhythm<br \/>\ndrummed with no hands to guide it. And the brain<br \/>\nis a temple of sparks and mazes. Its stony cage<br \/>\nhides impulses to roar and tear asunder.<br \/>\nBehind their masks, the kindergarteners<br \/>\nmake strange noises they think are pretend.<br \/>\nWhen they shut their eyes, they lose themselves.<br \/>\nBehind such loss is where they begin.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Give a man a god and watch as he becomes it.
